1. Who operates Better Atlantis
Better Atlantis is operated by Ruben Roy. Privacy questions, access/correction requests and complaints can be sent to mail@ruben-roy.com.
2. What this policy covers
This policy covers Better Atlantis Desktop and the Better Atlantis website/server services used by the Desktop app for releases, themes, announcements, feedback and optional telemetry. The old browser extensions and bookmarklet are retired and are no longer actively supported.
3. Timetable, school account and sign-in data
Better Atlantis Desktop connects to the official Google and Atlantis services using a dedicated browser session on your device. Depending on the school sign-in flow, the app may locally read your school email address and display name and may inspect Gmail pages to locate a one-time Atlantis login email.
The app may locally process:
- your school email address and display name;
- the Atlantis one-time sign-in link and related session values;
- timetable information returned by Atlantis, including classes, teachers, rooms, timetable periods, cancellations, exams, duties and cover information;
- the Atlantis dataset/school information needed to request your timetable.
During normal sign-in and timetable operation, Better Atlantis does not send this account, mailbox, authentication or timetable content to the Better Atlantis server. Requests for your timetable are made from the app to the official Atlantis service. Google and Atlantis process information under their own terms and privacy policies.
If you enable “Remove used Atlantis login emails”, Better Atlantis may delete the one-time Atlantis sign-in email after it has been used. This setting is optional.
4. Information stored only on your device
The Desktop app stores local application data so it can remember your preferences and work reliably. This can include:
- app settings, theme and appearance choices;
- custom class cards and custom class colours;
- a local timetable cache;
- update state and dismissed announcements;
- the dedicated Google/Atlantis browser session;
- if telemetry is enabled, a random installation identifier and local aggregate counters.
These local personalisation settings are not included in Better Atlantis telemetry. Logging out clears the Better Atlantis timetable cache and signs the dedicated browser session out. Removing the app’s local application-data folder removes the remaining local Better Atlantis settings.
5. Optional technical telemetry
Telemetry is off by default. If you choose to enable it in Settings → Privacy, the app sends a small technical heartbeat shortly after startup and periodically while it is running.
When enabled, telemetry may include:
- a random installation identifier generated by Better Atlantis; the server converts it to a keyed HMAC before storage;
- year group (Years 7-12 only);
- Better Atlantis version, first/previous version, operating-system family/major version, CPU architecture, Electron major version and whether the app is packaged;
- coarse reliability results/duration buckets for timetable refresh, authentication, cache use and updates;
- aggregate counters such as app starts, active days, week navigation, fortnight view, settings opens, CSV exports, print actions, feedback submissions and update activity;
- coarse app-health fields such as cache availability/age bucket and current update state.
Telemetry does not include your name, email address, Google/Atlantis account identifier, passwords, login links, cookies, session tokens, timetable contents, subject/class names, teacher names, rooms, custom classes, theme choices, colours, device name, serial number, MAC address or precise location.
The telemetry database keeps one current record per installation rather than a detailed event history. Records that have not been seen for more than 365 days are automatically deleted. You can turn telemetry off at any time.
6. Feedback
If you voluntarily submit a bug report or feature suggestion, Better Atlantis sends the text you type to the Better Atlantis server together with the app version, operating-system platform and CPU architecture. The server forwards that message to Discord for review. The Better Atlantis telemetry database does not store the feedback text.
Please do not include passwords, sign-in links, timetable screenshots, health information or other sensitive information in feedback. Feedback delivered through Discord is also subject to that service's own privacy practices.
7. Website, update and theme requests
The app contacts Better Atlantis-operated web services for update information, announcements and theme catalogues. These requests do not intentionally include your timetable or school account credentials. Like ordinary internet services, the infrastructure used to deliver these services may process technical connection information such as IP address, request time and user agent in operational logs. Better Atlantis may use short-lived in-memory connection information to rate-limit human-triggered public endpoints such as feedback and administration. Desktop telemetry is not rate-limited by school/public IP address; its abuse guard uses the same random installation identifier supplied for telemetry, converted to a server-side HMAC key, so many devices sharing one school network are not treated as one client. Better Atlantis does not copy ordinary web-server access-log IP addresses into the Desktop telemetry database.
8. Children and students
Better Atlantis is used for school timetables and may therefore be used by people under 18. Better Atlantis does not create an advertising profile. Optional telemetry is opt-in, and normal timetable, mailbox and authentication content is not sent to the Better Atlantis server. 9. Access, correction and deletion requests
You can change most Better Atlantis settings directly in the app and can disable telemetry at any time. For information held by the Better Atlantis server, you may contact mail@ruben-roy.com to ask about access, correction or deletion.
Telemetry records are not linked to your email address. As a result, we may not be able to identify which telemetry record belongs to you unless you can provide enough information to identify the local installation record. We will explain what can and cannot reasonably be located.
10. Security and retention
Better Atlantis uses technical and organisational measures to reduce unnecessary collection and protect the information it handles. Authentication/session values remain in the dedicated local browser session rather than being copied to the Better Atlantis server. Server telemetry accepts a restricted schema and stores only the keyed form of the random installation identifier.
No internet service can promise absolute security. If we become aware of a security or privacy incident, we will respond in accordance with applicable law.
11. Complaints
Send a privacy complaint to mail@ruben-roy.com with enough detail for us to understand the issue. We will review it and respond within a reasonable time. If Australian privacy law gives you a right to take the matter to a regulator, nothing in this policy limits that right.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when Better Atlantis or its data practices change. The current version will be published on this page with its last-updated date. Material changes may also be announced in the app.
